The third method, historical analogy, is radically inaccurate yet also dangerously seductive, because people are profoundly attached to the seeming stability of the past. In practice, though, our ideas of what has already happened are scarcely more solid than our predictions of tomorrow. If futurism is visionary, history is revisionary.

Tigerman’s work is a critique on the state of architectural pedagogy in Chicago and its environs in the late 1970s. By this time, the Postmodern movement was becoming a viable counterpoint to Mies’s Minimalist aesthetic and was being taught at other schools of architecture in the United States.”

First as Tragedy, Then as Farce: Cultural Capitalism as presented by Slavoj Zizek

Watch this before sending me death threats about my criticism of “humanitarian” organizations.

Okay in this case I feel there is something to see here but it veers dangerously into the land of Ayn Rands condemnation of altruism. Altruism is a natural human instinct and it should be embraced no matter how counter revolutionary it is. The act of giving money to a homeless person you see directly on the street is one motivated by human kindness, morality and empathy for all human beings. To say that you will refuse to adopt this virtue because it feeds into capitalism is absurd.

The criticism of conspicuous humanitarian consumption is spot on, we reach a dangerous area where once consumption and alleviation of guilt is intertwined, we no longer feel the need to be directly charitable, only to consume.

However, the direct forms of charity to the poor are an alleviation of human suffering and if that makes them less motivated to overthrow capitalism, so be it! I’ll be damned to look a homeless person in the eye and not give him a little bit of money if I can. Because frankly, these persons lives are worth more than any system you propose, with no guarantee of saving them

Donating to large bueracracies who have no clue what they are doing in Africa is one thing. But to claim that it is moral to act in financial altruism to your fellow man standing right in front of you is delusional, reminding us how close that orthodox marxism is with objectivist capitalism. 2 sides of the same “rational” materialistic coin sometimes.

He does say that it’s better than nothing right now. He doesn’t simply advocate a complete end to it all. I think on balance it’s a good critique

I felt that he was half hearted when he ended by saying that charity is not necessarily evil. I need not hear him spout the liberal social orders lines about how cutting a check to the red cross is the most humane thing anyone can do. He lost me when he said that direct charity to the poor is worse for them because it may allow them to live longer.

Zizek seems to be of the Marxist school where class war is the most important thing in the world and that if conditions must worsen before class war begins, then it is fine because the end result will be the salvation of mankind. I take a complete opposite position here because if conditions have to worsen one bit to guarantee Marxism in the future then I will not support it. I would much rather reform the current system that is in shambles if Marxism means the poor must suffer and die in the streets first to provoke a class war.

I don’t think Zizek believes conditions must worsen before class war begins at all. He realizes that it’s already being waged, and that this “Cultural Capitalism” is a tool that the ruling class uses to proliferate the image of some humanity lying dormant deep within capitalism. Not that charity is concretely immoral, but that one must realize in the abstract sense, that charity is by no means a solution to the problems created by capitalism. It’s a cloak.

I donate to charities when I can, but I realize that in doing so I cannot ignore the bigger picture — what truly creates these problems.
